Hyannis Triathlon 1 Race Description

Registration now open!

Join experienced race veterans and triathlon newcomers alike for the 40th year of the Hyannis Triathlon. This year the Hyannis 1 Tri has been designated the MA State High School Championship (sprint) and the MA Age Group Championship (Olympic).

This is the longest-running triathlon on the East Coast — and after all these years, the accolades still continue:

  • Named as one of the 20 Best Triathlons in the Nation by Men’s Health magazine (2016)
  • Named one of The Most Amazing Triathlons to Do in the USA Today by The Culture Trip (2017)
  • Voted one of the Top 5 Small Races Worldwide by the Triathlete’s Choice Awards (2018)

Both the Sprint and the Olympic races start and finish at picturesque, sandy Craigville Beach. It’s challenging — but still able to be completed by fitness enthusiasts who have trained for the distances. The atmosphere is special; the views are spectacular; and your satisfaction of accomplishment will last for a long time!

MA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

For the fourth year in a row, USA Triathlon has named the Hyannis Triathlon (June 12, 2021) both the 2021 Age Group as well as the 2021 High School Massachusetts Championship race.

For age groupers: if you finish in the top 25% of your age group in the Olympic distance event, you will quality for the Age Group National Championships in Milwaukee on August 8. Or: if you finish in the top 15% of your age group in the Hyannis Sprint distance race, you also qualify for the Age Group Nationals! All Hyannis participants may enter into the National Sprint distance championship event on August 7; there is no pre-qualification requirement.

At the Olympic race, Massachusetts State Championship age group awards will be given to the first three men, and first three women, overall (must be Massachusetts residents to podium, but anyone is welcome to race)

For high schoolers: state championship awards will be given to the top three boys and top three girls in the Sprint race, ranging from graduating 8th graders up to graduating seniors. Additionally, all high schoolers who compete on June 13 are qualified into the U.S. High School Championships on July 31 in West Chester, Ohio. Must be Massachusetts residents to podium, but all are welcome to race.

COVID-19

It is important to keep athletes, volunteers and staff safe! As guidelines shift for events of this type we will update this race's website page and post to Facebook.

SPRINT DISTANCE COURSE DESCRIPTION

Swim: 1/4 mile

A sandy, waist-deep start at Craigville Beach (expect temps mid-70s). The course is rectangular in shape (approx 150 yards between the two turns). Wave conditions over the years have ranged from glass-calm to a moderate chop; never “big surf” in the protected waters of Nantucket Sound.

Bike: 10.2 miles

The “rolling hills” course is a shade over 10 miles: first entering the historic village of Centerville, then winding out to the villages of Osterville and Wianno before returning along a beachside road to Craigville Beach. Single loop; and no duplication of any stretch of road!

Run: 3.6 miles

The athletes head off toward Hyannisport, with a quarter-mile flat run evolving into a gradual climb for a quarter-mile, then a gentle rolling grade until the last mile which is a gentle downhill grade. A water stop is staffed by enthusiastic volunteers at the midpoint of the 3.6-mile run.

OLYMPIC DISTANCE COURSE DESCRIPTION

Swim: 0.9 mile

A sandy, waist-deep start at Craigville Beach (expect temps in the upper 60s or low 70s). Two loops extending beyond the Sprint course buoys in a rectangular shape. Athletes will make continuous loops (staying in the water) until the end of the swim.

Bike: approx 24 miles

The Olympic distance bicycle route will mirror the Sprint course with the exception of an additional loop starting in the village of Centerville and extending into Osterville.

Run: approx 6.2 miles

The Olympic distance run route will mirror the Sprint course with the exception of an additional loop.

TRI IT YOUR WAY (VIRTUAL CATEGORY)

Can't make it in person? No Problem!

Here's how Tri It Your Way works:

1) Pick your triathlon activities! Remember, you can either swim the 400 yards or choose another activity to do for 10 minutes. The bike needs to be at least 10 miles and the run needs to be at least a 5K (yes, you may go over, but not under!).

2) SAFETY FIRST! Make sure you are taking all the safety precautions when swimming, biking, and running. This means not swimming alone and following all the rules of the road (or trail). Just like all the precautions you take when training or racing an event, we want you to be safe.

3) Record each activity with your watch, or phone, or bike computer.

4) Document your tri! Whether it’s someone taking pictures of you “racing” or stopping for a selfie mid-run. We want to see you in action! Dogs, kids, partners, friends (socially distanced, of course) are encouraged to join in with you!

5) Go to our event page and post your “race” data and your pictures. OR email your pics and race data to info@neeevents.com.

“Tri It Your Way” runs from June 12 - 19. Race any day within this time period.

Prizes will be awarded the week of June 20, based on the pictures and race data that is submitted. Prize categories range from “Best run with dog” to “Prettiest View” to “Best alternate swim activity.” We have lots of fun swag to give you!

USAT SANCTIONED

Results will count toward national and regional rankings. All USAT rules and regulations will apply. Racers are subject to time penalties or disqualification for infractions of USAT rules.

Please note: You will need at least a 1-day USA Triathlon membership in order to race any sanctioned triathlon (including this one). Follow prompts through registration to choose a 1-day ($15) or Annual ($50) Membership.

WATER CONDITIONS

Race director does reserve the right to substitute a beach run for the swim if water temperature is below 65 degrees, water quality tests indicate any health hazard, or if surf conditions are extremely rough.

PACKET PICK-UP AND LATE REGISTRATION

5:30-6:30am at race site morning of race or 5-7pm Friday evening at race site. All participants: BRING ID. Those who have an annual USAT membership MUST BRING THEIR USAT CARD.

You will be able to pick up packets for others!

TRANSFER/REFUND POLICY

There will be no refunds or waitlist but private transfers will be allowed as long as both parties notify registration personnel by noon the Thursday before race.

TRAVEL

For those traveling from afar, Cape Cod is awash with hotels, motor lodges, inns, bed and breakfasts, vacation cottages and AirBnB offerings.

RELAY TEAMS

Yes! Your choice: 2-person or 3-person

TIMING

Chip timed. Results are expected to be posted to NEEevents.com within a day. Results link will be posted on this website and the race Facebook page.

NO DOGS!

We all love our pets. But town regulations forbid dogs on or near the beach this time of the year. Leave the pooch at home!

PARKING

Available at two parking lots: one adjacent to the beach; one across the road from the beach (park in the lot across the street if you want to leave before the Olympic distance athletes have finished their race). A short walk from both!

AWARDS

Awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for 10:00am day of race. Awards presented to top three competitors in each age group (both male and female) as well as top Elites, Clydesdale/Athena, First-Timers, Male, Female and Mixed Relay Teams, and Aquabike. Those who cannot remain for the ceremony may pickup their award at the Awards table or by mailing a self-addressed-stamped oversized envelope to the race director.

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are welcomed. Family members of racers encouraged to volunteer while watching the action. Priority parking, free T-shirt, refreshments and goodie bag.
