MaryLynn Hardesty Teal Hearts 5K/10K Race Description

The MaryLynn Hardesty Teal Hearts 5K/10K is an annual race that benefits The MaryLynn Hardesty Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded right here in Carolina Beach, NC. This race takes place on certified 5K and 10K courses on Carolina Beach, where MaryLynn and her family spend their most cherished times together.

This event is the main fundraiser for the MLH Foundation, which will hugely impact this foundations ability to financially and emotionally support women diagnosed with ovarian cancer and increase their presence of disease awareness and spreading the knowledge of early detection stretegies in Eastern NC. To find more information on The MaryLynn Hardesty Foundation, find the website here: www.mlhfoundation.org.

We hope to have many women and families affected by ovarian and other gynecological cancers in attendance on race day, joining us in our fight towards spreading awareness of of the signs and symptoms of gynecological cancers, educating local healthcare providers on early detection strategies, and one day ending these diseases. If you're comfortable with being put in contact with Patrick, the race director, and potentially being acknowledged during the awards ceremony, please check the corresponding box during your registration process.

We invite EVERYONE to join us on September 26th 2020, whether you are interested in a fun run/walk or a more serious RFID chip-timed 5K or 10K to prepare for a more serious race. We are well prepared!

You can run solo or as part of a team. Make it a competitive 5K or 10K, relaxed jog, or fun run with your friends rocking as much teal gear as you can; whatever you desire! We appreciate your involvement, no matter how small or large!

Important locations and times for the run to keep in mind:
- Same day registration and BIB PICK-UP will begin at 7am at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk Gazebo, located at 1 Carolina Beach Avenue South
- The 10K will begin at 9am and the 5K will begin at 9:15am
- The start line will be located just past (west) the corner of Cape Fear Blvd and 3rd Street. We will have volunteers lead runners over to the start line prior to the race. This will be announced!
- Awards ceremony at roughly 10:15-10:20am, depending on finishing times
- The reception at Veggie Wagon of Carolina Beach begins at 11:30am

Prior to race day, olease download the FREE mobile app RunGo (by typing in “RunGo” and then “Search” in your iPhone or Android mobile phone App Store). Aside from relying our markers to guide your route (which are easy to follow), this app is the best way to virtually direct your route the day of the race! Please make sure to allow the app to use your location, but the choice to enable Siri on iPhones is optional. You must then register your device by using your email and a chosen password. You will get an email asking to confirm your email on they system. Whether this is required or not, please go ahead and do this to avoid issues during our runs! When you do this, it also allows you to create a profile by creating a “handle” (profile name) and an optional location. Now, go back to the app, and click “Find Route”, and follow the search terms in the bullets below:
- 5K route, labeled and searchable as “MLH Teal Hearts 5K” on the app. Also, here is a link that can be used as well if anyone has trouble searching the run on the app: https://routes.rungoapp.com/route/mqa3eGuXGw
- 10K route, labeled and searchable as “MLH Teal Hearts 10K” on the app. Also, here is a link that can be used as well if anyone has trouble searching the run on the app: https://routes.rungoapp.com/route/yS8z12bFGo

Once you click on your route, you can overview the map and also choose to “Start Run”!! Also, please know that the route will be marked with cones and yard signs directing you in the event you do not have the use of a smartphone during the run. We have you covered!

After ending your route at the end of Hamlet (and getting your fair share of applause from myself/volunteers/fellow runners, you will keep walking directly toward the beach. Walk onto the beach and turn left (north), which will also be directed with a sign. You will walk north until you hit the gazebo area where the registration tents are. There will be a sign that directs you from there off the beach back to the gazebo. Please hang out, talk with me, and get to know one another while you wait for the awards ceremony to start! I want to see all of your smiling and sweaty faces.

We want each and every one of you to attend our reception following the run!. It is located at the Veggie Wagon of Carolina Beach, and it will now begin at 11:30am! Please show up hungry and ready to enjoy the food truck or snacks/meals prepared by The Wagon. Also, I have had 5 local breweries donated beer kegs, so ALL proceeds from those purchases will be donated!
- Parking: We’d prefer everyone either walks or bikes to the reception, but we have also worked out a few parking areas with the town of Carolina Beach. The first lot is the “Hamlet lot” located at 107 Woody Hewett Ave. The second is the Shell Parking lot, also known to locals (or at least my family) as “the old car wash lot”, located at 100 Atlanta Ave. The third and only free lot is located right before the Veggie Wagon on an unpaved path at roughly 606 S Lake Park Blvd. If you use this lot, please strategically park. There are also a number of other lots that can be used in a short distance with a simple google search.

“One of MaryLynn’s dedicated purposes towards the end of her life was to share the knowledge of ovarian cancer earlier detection strategies, and to empower them to educate our community, so that women similarly affected by gynecological cancers can have improved outcomes and a better quality of life through the benefit of an earlier diagnosis, better treatment options and overall increased survival. Please help us spread awareness of these signs and symptoms to your friends, family, and healthcare providers: 1) feeling the need to urinate urgently or often, 2) trouble eating or feeling full quickly, 3) pelvic or abdominal pain, 4) bloating, in addition to unexplained indigestion, upset stomach, nausea, exhaustion, constipation, abdominal swelling, painful intercourse, menstrual changes or weight loss.” — Patrick Hardesty, Race Director

“MaryLynn was an intelligent woman. Not just intellectually, but emotionally. She was a spirit on earth and I now hope her spirit is free and limitless. She had such a strong love for her family and desire to fill life with purpose and meaning. She was able to “fight” her disease without being angry or paralyzed by fear because she had such a spiritual understanding of what it means to be “alive”. She was an example and while I very much wish that she had a longer journey on earth am certain that her journey has just begun.” — John Boggess, MD

On behalf of MaryLynn, her family truly appreciates your support in any form and hopes to see so many people in attendance, not only those who are local or personally knew her, but from all over! Please help us spread awareness for this event!
