The Tactical Games - Camp San Luis Obispo CA

New event for 2020! The Tactical Games, in concert with the California National Guard (CANG), has scheduled a Tactical Games event on Camp San Luis Obispo (CSLO). In addition to testing the skills of tactical athletes this event will serve as a recruiting and selection tool for CANG and their special teams. This event is open registration and open to tactical athletes of all backgrounds not just military or law enforcement.
 
Camp San Luis Obispo has unique training areas including rugged terrain to navigate, a military-level Shoot-house with associated tunnels and barriers, long distance shooting, short distance tactical shooting, and of course  some surprises we aren't going to mention.
 
Camp San Luis Obispo is going to great lengths to make this an amazing event for everyone:

• FREE LODGING!!  CSLO is opening the barracks space on the base for all athletes; civilian, military, law enforcement, as long as there is space. So, first come, first serve on the barracks space.
• Weapons Storage!!The armory will be opened for storage of weapons and ammunition at night.  This mitigates the worries of keeping guns and ammo in vehicles or leaving them unattended in hotel or barracks rooms.
• We have worked closely with the Judge Advocate General (military attorneys) to ensure that the athletes travelling to the event are covered under the current laws in the state of California. Details in the paragraph below.
• We are working with the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department to facilitate athletes who are flying and driving into the venue.  This ensures that there are no hiccups for athletes traveling to and from the venue.
• We will be providing three documents for athletes to carry with them in order to manage the legalities of entering and departing the state with firearms.  These documents will be carried with the athlete as long as they are traveling to or from the event.  As long as the athletes are traveling to and from the event, they are covered under the California statute listed below.

California State Law
Summary:
The following California Statute allows for out-of-state firearms owners to travel into the State of California with non-compliant weapons, for the purpose of a competition.  It stipulates that the weapons must not be left behind, sold, or gifted to another person, but must also be taken out of the state upon completion of the competition.  This legally covers athletes traveling to and from the competition.  Once at the competition, athletes will be able to store their firearms on-site on Camp San Luis Obispo.   
§30665.  
Sections 30600, 30605, and 30610 shall not apply to the possession and importation of an assault weapon or a .50 BMG rifle into this state by a nonresident if all of the following conditions are met:
(a) The person is attending or going directly to or coming directly from an organized competitive match or league competition that involves the use of an assault weapon or a .50 BMG rifle.
(b) The competition or match is conducted on the premises of one of the following:
(1) A target range that holds a regulatory or business license for the purpose of practicing shooting at that target range.
(2) A target range of a public or private club or organization that is organized for the purpose of practicing shooting at targets.
(c) The match or competition is sponsored by, conducted under the auspices of, or approved by, a law enforcement agency or a nationally or state recognized entity that fosters proficiency in, or promotes education about, firearms.
(d) The assault weapon or .50 BMG rifle is transported in accordance with Section 25610 or Article 3 (commencing with Section 25505) of Chapter 2 of Division 5.
(e) The person is 18 years of age or over and is not in a class of persons prohibited from possessing firearms by virtue of Chapter 2 (commencing with Section 29800) or Chapter 3 (commencing with Section 29900) of Division 9 of this code or Section 8100 or 8103 of the Welfare and Institutions Code.

We have gone the extra-mile in making sure this event is a huge success both for the CANG, as well as for our civilian athletes who want to compete at this amazing venue.  We have worked diligently to ensure that athletes can enter and depart the State of California with their firearms as they are, to facilitate this event.  We communicated with the California Department of Justice CDOJ in order to get blanket legal cover for the event, and although we did not receive any special treatment, we were told that the existing law §30665 is adequate legal coverage for athletes entering and departing the state.

In a strange twist, this statute allows more legal rights to out-of-state firearms owners than it does to those actually living in the State of California.
